why you’ll love this healthy iced matcha latte recipe

  • No caffeine crash. Matcha has a unique form of caffeine that has been altered by an amino acid called L-Theanine. This amino acid provides a sustained release of energy that doesn’t lead to the jitters or crash associated with other forms of caffeine.
  • Boosts metabolism and burns calories. Matcha is rich in antioxidants, including EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which has been shown to boost metabolism and burn calories.
  • Refreshing. This Iced Matcha Latte is the perfect summertime drink. It’s cool, creamy, and delicious!
  • Something different. If you’re stuck in the middle of a drink rut, it’s just the thing to try.

what is matcha?

Matcha is a type of green tea that is grown and produced in Japan. The leaves are shade-grown for the last few weeks before harvest, which increases the chlorophyll content and makes the matcha a vibrant green color. After harvesting, the leaves are carefully ground into a fine powder using traditional stone mills.

Ingredients to make an iced matcha latte

  • Matcha green tea powder: You’ll need just a teaspoon of matcha for this recipe. I recommend using ceremonial grade matcha, which is of the highest quality and has the most delicate flavor.
  • Milk: I prefer to use oat milk for this recipe, but you can use any type of milk that you like.
  • Honey: Just a touch of honey helps to balance out the bitterness of the matcha.
  • Ice: To keep your latte nice and cold.
  • Water: You’ll need to mix the matcha powder with water to make a tea before adding it to the milk.
Ingredients for recipe in individual containers: matcha powder, vanilla, hot water, ice cubes, oat milk.

Tips for making the best iced matcha latte

  1. Make sure to use a frother, electric whisk, or bamboo brush. The key to smooth and delicious matcha is making sure it’s not clumpy because the last thing you want is a sip of powdery green stuff.
  2. Start slowly with the matcha amounts. The recommended serving is one teaspoon. But if you’re apprehensive about the taste, try it with just half a teaspoon to help acclimate to the taste.
  3. Use high-quality matcha. Not all matcha is created equal! ceremonial grade matcha is the best quality and has the most delicate flavor. It can be a bit pricey, but it’s worth it if you’re looking for the best iced matcha latte experience.

popular substitutions & additions

  • Add coffee. You can use regular coffee or decaffeinated here if you’re worried about too much caffeine. But the flavor of matcha and coffee go so well together.
  • Switch up your milk. I love oat milk in my iced matcha latte, but you can use any type of milk that you like. Soy, almond, and coconut milk are all delicious options.
  • Skip the honey. If you don’t want to use honey, you can try agave nectar or even a little bit of sugar or omit it altogether.

how to store an iced green tea matcha latte

Your matcha latte is best served fresh, but in the case that you made too much, you can store it in the fridge. You’ll want to keep it separated from the milk until you’re ready to drink it.

how long will a matcha latte last in the fridge?

If the milk and the matcha have already been combined, it will last in the fridge for up to 12 hours. But if you’ve stored them separately, the matcha will last up to 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, matcha does have caffeine. But it’s a different type of caffeine than what you find in coffee. Matcha provides a sustained release of energy that doesn’t lead to the jitters or crashes associated with other forms of caffeine.

If your matcha latte is too strong, you can add more milk or water to dilute it. Remember, if you’re new to matcha, start off with just half a teaspoon and work your way up to one teaspoon.

  1. This is better that any place that sells coffee and tea drinks. I was spending $8.00 a day. Now I make it at home! This recipe is the same the coffee shops use. Very easy to make and so good!!

  2. There appear to be two different recipes on this page. One calls for two tablespoons of water, while the other one calls for four ounces. Is
more water required when using honey?

    1. Hi Joanne, follow the directions in the recipe card. It seems that the honey and water was accidently omitted from the instructions in the middle of the post. I’ve fixed that now.

  3. Hi, I have been wanting to make this for a while, I have been told that you need it get good quality matcha, can you send me the link to one you would recommend please? Thanks

  4. Refreshing and delicious! Might I ask what particular brand of oat milk you prefer? I’ve tried a few different brands, flavor is fine but not a fan of the texture. Thank you!!

      1. Thank you for pointing that out! There could be that much sugar in this latte depending on what kind of oat milk you use, but most generic oat milks don’t have that much sugar in it, so I have changed the nutrition information to accurately reflect that.
