It’s summer time and we can all use a little more hydration! Why not jazz up your plain ice cubes by making fruit ice cubes? This is an excellent way to use up leftover fruit, sweeten your water naturally and add a little fun and color to plain water. The process of making these is as easy as dropping fruit into an ice cube tray, adding water and freezing.

So if you’re looking for a fun way for you or your family to drink more water this summer, try these adorable fruit ice cubes. Then add them in cups of water, use in water bottles, or serve with lemonade or sparkling juice. They’re customizable with any fruit you’d like to use, super easy to make, and always fun to enjoy!

How to make fruit ice cubes

First, wash the fruit you’d like to use and cut them into smaller pieces to fit the ice cube tray you’re using. Cutting them into smaller pieces allows you to add more fruit into each ice cube. So, the color really pops and the flavor really stands out.

Next, place the fruit into the ice cube trays or molds you’re using. And add water to the cubes. I recommend using double boiled filtered water. You can use regular filtered water. However, double boiling it helps to remove any excess particles that could cloud the ice cubes.

And the best part? After frozen, the water is still super clear!

You’ll want to freeze for at least 4 hour or overnight. And when they’re frozen you can pop the fruit cubes out of the tray or mold and enjoy them!

I love having these with lemonade to add an extra fruity touch. And it’s fun to eat up the fruit when the ice melts.

How can you use fruit ice cubes

These fruit ice cubes are super versatile. My kids enjoy just eating them on their own. I can’t handle the frozen ice on my teeth though…yikes! Here are more fun ways to enjoy them and save your teeth haha!

  • With water (still or sparkling)
  • With lemonade or other juices
  • In smoothies to blend with other ingredients

What fruits can you use in fruit cubes

I’ve tried these fruit ice cubes with so many types of fruits. And, I don’t think I’ve found any that don’t work. You’ll want to think about how you’re using them and what fruits and flavors you like. For example, if you’re drinking them with water, freezing banana ice cubes might be a little weird. But, if you’re using it in a smoothie, that would be perfect!

I love going for color. I used strawberries, orange slices, lemon slices and kiwi in these ones.

Ingredients
  

  • Filtered water double boiled and cooled
  • Strawberries
  • Orange Slices
  • Lemon Slices
  • Kiwi

Instructions

  • Wash the fruits and chop them into small pieces; arrange in the ice cube tray. If you’re using mint or any herbs, press them slightly with a knife or spoon to allow them to release their flavor.
  • Pour the filtered double-boiled water over the fruit. Freeze for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  • Enjoy with a cup of water, lemonade or on their own

Notes

Storage: Store any leftovers back in the freezer. They will last up to 3 months.
Make Ahead Tips: Boiling the water takes up the most time since you have to double boil i. If you have this done in advance, it will save you prep time.
Equipment: You can use any ice cube tray to make the fruit ice cubes. I used the iceology trays from Dexas, which removes impurities and bubbles during the freezing process. It makes for crystal clear ice so you can skin the double boiling process.
