While tons of people are eating less bread lately, I’m toasting it and topping it with hummus. Hummus toast makes for such a delicious, protein-packed plant-based snack. Heck, you can even have these for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Not to mention, the topping options are endless! I give you 4 hummus toast ideas below, but that is just the tip of the iceberg!

Nothing will truly replace avocado toast. But this hummus toast no-recipe recipe is such a winner in my book. It’s as easy as slapping hummus on toast and topping it however you’d like!

How to make hummus toast

I call this a no-recipe recipe because it’s more of an inspirational post to show you how to put common ingredients together to create something special and tasty. It’s ingredients we know and use all the time coming together in a beautiful way. Growing up in a Lebanese house, we only ate hummus with pita. But now I’m all about any and all breads to top my hummus with.

What type of hummus should I use?

If you want to make the hummus from scratch, I have the best hummus recipe. It’s the one I learned from my Lebanese parents, and it has only four ingredients. You basically throw chickpeas (peeled if possible), tahini, garlic, and lemon juice in a food processor until it’s smooth and creamy. And then you can use it to make hummus toast any time you want. I’ve also got some not so traditional hummus recipes you could try!

You can also buy hummus from the grocery store. It’s sold everywhere now, and some brands are better than others. It will just depend on your taste preference. But look for ones that have chickpeas, tahini, garlic, and lemon juice as the first four ingredients without much else in there. You can use plain hummus, extra garlic hummus, or even go crazy with colorful hummus like roasted red pepper hummus or green herbed hummus.

What type of bread should I use?

You can pretty much use any toasted bread. So use what you have and keep it simple. I would recommend that you use thick-sliced bread and toast it. Buy good bread that’s strong enough to hold not only the hummus, but all the glorious toppings you will be adding to your toast. Use something that offers a sturdy base, like a thick multi-grain bread, Ezekiel bread, or even a gluten-free bread you like.

Then spread the creamy, dreamy hummus over the toast, and get ready to be creative with the toppings!

So if you’re convinced you should try a recipe but looking for ideas and inspiration on how to top it, check out these ideas. Now I’m a huge cheese fan, so two of these ideas are not vegan, but the hummus toast itself is vegan, so you can omit the cheese or use plant-based varieties.

Tips for making the best hummus toast

  • Experiment with additional bold flavors: Don’t hesitate to add extra flavor to your toasts. Sprinkle some chili flakes for a touch of heat, or add a squeeze of lemon juice to brighten up the flavors.
  • Use Fresh Bread: Starting off with the freshest bread is ideal. Use your favorite kind, whether it be while grain, multi-grain, gluten-free, or sourdough, the options are endless.
  • Temperature matters: For the best hummus toast experience, make sure your toasted bread is still warm when spreading the hummus. This helps the hummus meld with the bread, creating a creamy texture in every bite.

How do I keep the toast from becoming soggy?

To prevent soggy bread, let the bread cool just slightly before spreading on the hummus. You want the bread warm, but not hot. Additionally, avoid adding watery toppings, and if you’re preparing your ingredients in advance, assemble the toasts just before serving to avoid any soggy bits.

  • ¾ cup homemade or store-bought hummus
  • 4 slices of bread

Instructions

  • Toast the slices of bread in a toaster or toaster oven.
  • Spread about 3 tablespoons of hummus on each piece of toast. Add the toppings of choice and enjoy immediately!

Notes

Storage: It’s best to consume the hummus toast right when you make it because the hummus may leave the bread soft and soggy if left for hours. However the homemade hummus itself will last up to 7 days in the fridge in an airtight container. Store-bought hummus may last even longer depending on the brand.
Make Ahead Tips: You can make the hummus up to 7 days in advance and store it in the fridget to top your bread with it as you like.
Equipment: I use my Kitchen Aid food processor to make hummus and let the machine run for about 5 minutes. It creates a very creamy consistency with minimal effort.
