This oven baked french fries recipe is super simple to make and pairs wonderfully with burgers, steaks or chicken. They’re also pretty versatile so you can season them with whatever you’d like or keep it simple as suggested in the recipe card below.

Ingredients

  • Potatoes: Russet potatoes work best for homemade fries in the oven. That’s why they’re called baking potatoes. Other starchy potatoes, like Yukon Gold, will work well. It’s best to avoid waxy potatoes like reds or fingerlings.
  • Oil: Olive oil give these french fries great flavor. But any high heat oil like canola or vegetable will work well.
  • Seasonings: Paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper, or play with your own mix!

How to Make baked French Fries

  • Slice the potatoes lengthwise into about 5-6 slices.
  • Cut each of those slices into thin sticks, about ¼ inch thick. The thinner you cut them, the more crisp they will get.

  • Fill a bowl with water and add the potatoes to it. Soak the french fries, and feel free to switch out the water a couple times if you find the potatoes turn pink or brown. That’s a normal oxidation reaction.
  • Drain the potatoes and dry them really well with a paper towel.
  • Toss them with olive oil and seasoning and arrange them on the baking sheet, making sure they are not overlapping too much.

Tips to make this recipe

  1. Use russet potatoes as the best choice for these oven French fries. Their skins are thicker that other potatoes are more dry. This helps them crisp up well in the in the oven.
  2. Cut the potatoes into similar sizes. This will ensure that they cook through evenly.
  3. Don’t skip the soaking. This is the best secret tip to getting crisp texture for oven baked fries. Soaking helps to draw out the starch, making the fries more firm and less likely to clump together in the oven.
  4. Make sure the french fries aren’t touching on the baking sheet. This is key in helping the cook evenly and get crispy. If they are overlapping, they will steam rather than get crispy.
